Reading time (~200 wpm)

0 min

How it works

  • Words = whitespace-separated tokens
  • Characters count every symbol; “no spaces” strips whitespace first
  • Paragraphs = blocks separated by blank lines
  • Reading time assumes ~200 words per minute

Examples

  1. “The quick brown fox jumps over the lazy dog.” → 9 words, 44 characters (35 without spaces)
  2. A 400-word blog post ≈ 2 minutes of reading time at 200 wpm
  3. Two paragraphs separated by a blank line count as 2 paragraphs
  4. 1,000 words ≈ 5 minutes of reading time at 200 wpm

FAQ

Does the word counter count hyphenated words as one?

Yes. Tokens are split on whitespace only, so “well-known” counts as one word.

How is reading time estimated?

We divide word count by 200 words per minute and round up to whole minutes (under 1 minute shows “< 1 min”).

Is my text uploaded?

No. Counting runs entirely in your browser; nothing is sent to a server.

What is a typical college essay length?

Many assignments fall in the 500–1,000 word range, but always follow your brief. Use this counter to stay within limits.
