Guides/Average reading speed (wpm)
Average reading speed in words per minute
Words per minute (wpm) is the usual yardstick for reading speed. Blog “X min read” labels almost always use a fixed wpm assumption — often 200 or 238 — not a personalized test.
Typical ranges
- Silent adult prose: often cited around 200–250 wpm.
- Careful / technical: closer to 150–180 wpm.
- Skimming: can exceed 300 wpm with lower comprehension.
- Speaking aloud: commonly ~130–150 wpm.
How “min read” is calculated
Minutes ≈ word count ÷ assumed wpm (then round up). Example at 200 wpm: 1000 words → 5 minutes. Details:how long to read 1000 words.
Worked examples
- 500 words @ 200 wpm: 2.5 → often shown as 3 min.
- 1800 words @ 238 wpm: ≈ 7.6 → 8 min.
- Talk script 900 words @ 140 wpm spoken: ≈ 6.4 minutes.
- Your pace: time yourself on a known word count: wpm = words ÷ minutes.
