Guides/Reading time from word count
Reading time from word count formula
Blogs often print “8 min read.” Under the hood that is usuallyword count ÷ words per minute, rounded up.
Basic formula
- Minutes ≈ words ÷ WPM (common defaults ~200–250 silent reading WPM).
- 1,000 words ÷ 200 WPM = 5 minutes —1,000-word guide.
- Speeds vary by density and skimming —average WPM.
Worked examples
- 500 words ÷ 250 WPM = 2 minutes.
- 2,000 words ÷ 200 WPM = 10 minutes.
- 3,000 words ÷ 225 WPM ≈ 13.3 → often labeled 14 min.

Caveats
- Code blocks and image-heavy posts skew “minutes.”
- Speaking time for the same text is usually slower than silent reading.
Choosing a WPM assumption
- Light blog prose: ~230–250 WPM is common for “min read” labels.
- Technical docs: use a slower WPM or add buffer for code samples.
- Always show the word count nearby if the estimate drives expectations.
