How long to read 1000 words
Reading time is usually estimated from word count ÷ words per minute (wpm). Silent adult reading often falls near200–250 wpm for plain prose; denser material is slower.
The basic formula
Minutes ≈ word count ÷ wpm
- At 200 wpm: 1000 ÷ 200 = 5 minutes
- At 250 wpm: 1000 ÷ 250 = 4 minutes
- At 150 wpm (careful / technical): ≈ 6.7 minutes
Quick table (≈200 wpm)
| Words | ≈ minutes |
|---|---|
| 300 | 1.5 |
| 500 | 2.5 |
| 1000 | 5 |
| 1500 | 7.5 |
| 2500 | 12.5 |
Worked examples
- Blog post 1000 words: label as “5 min read” at 200 wpm — common on many sites.
- Essay 2000 words: ≈ 10 minutes silent reading at 200 wpm.
- Speaking aloud: often ~130–150 wpm. 1000 words ≈7–8 minutes spoken — longer than silent reading.
- Character limits: SMS and bios care about characters, not minutes. See character vs word count.
Common mistakes
- Using the same wpm for skimming headlines and reading academic PDFs.
- Equating word count with speaking time for a talk.
- Ignoring images and code blocks that slow real-world reading.
