Guides/Character limits for short posts
How many characters in a tweet-style limit?
Short-form fields advertise character caps (bios, subjects, legacy “tweet-style” limits). Those caps usually count letters, spaces, and punctuation — not words.
Characters ≠ words
- Characters: every code point the platform counts (often including spaces).
- Words: whitespace-separated tokens — better for essays —character vs word count.
- Emoji and some languages may count as more than one “character” on certain platforms — check their docs.
Worked examples
Hello world— 11 characters, 2 words.- A 280-character cap is not “280 words.”
- Reading time for long drafts still uses words —essay word count·reading speed.
Editing tips
- Cut filler spaces and duplicate punctuation first.
- Prefer sentence case over ALL CAPS for readability —ALL CAPS cleanup.
