Guides/Seeded shuffle explained
Seeded shuffle explained simply
A normal shuffle aims to put a list in an unpredictable order. Aseeded shuffle uses a starting number (the seed) so the same list + same seed always produce the same order — useful for audits and reproducible demos.
Plain intuition
- Think of the seed as choosing which shuffled deck from a huge catalog of decks.
- Same catalog + same seed → same deck order every time.
- Different seed → different order (still should look well mixed if the algorithm is sound).
When people use it
- Raffle transparency: publish seed + algorithm + frozen list so others can verify.Fair raffle with a list.
- Tests / games: replay the same “random” order while debugging.
- Habit rotation: deterministic daily seed (e.g. date string) to rotate chores —shuffle checklists.
Fairness caveats
- If you pick the seed after seeing names, you can bias the outcome — choose the seed before freezing incentives, or use an external public random beacon.
- A bad shuffle algorithm can be biased even with a seed.
- For casual picks without reproducibility, a simple uniform draw is enough —pick without bias.
