Guides/Shuffle a checklist for habits
How to shuffle a checklist for habits
Fixed checklist order makes early items more likely to get done. Shuffling (or randomizing pick order) spreads attention when habits or chores are roughly equal priority.
When shuffling helps
- Weekly chores with no required sequence.
- Practice drills or review prompts you tend to skip at the bottom.
- Rotating “which habit first” so mornings do not always burn the same slot.
Keep a fixed order when sequence matters (meds before food, warm-up before heavy lifts).
Fair methods
- Randomize the list: shuffle lines, then work top to bottom.
- Pick one at random: draw the next task from remaining items —unbiased picks.
- Rotate daily: move yesterday’s first item to the end (deterministic fairness).
Worked examples
- 5 chores: dishes, laundry, trash, vacuum, desk. Shuffle → new order each Saturday so laundry is not always last.
- Habit stack of 4: stretch, read 10 min, inbox zero, walk. Random first item; keep the rest optional after a time box.
- Not for giveaways: prize draws need a frozen entrant list —fair giveaway draws.
