Guides/Fair giveaway list draw
Randomize a list for a giveaway fairly
A fair giveaway gives every eligible entry the same chance. Clean the list first, then draw with a uniform random pick — not a finger on a spreadsheet.
Before you draw
- Define eligibility (one entry per email/handle, geo, age rules) in public rules.
- Deduplicate the list; remove staff if rules say so.
- Export a frozen list (CSV or plain lines) so the entry set cannot change mid-draw.
- Announce you will use a random picker or numbered draw — then stick to it.
Fair draw methods
- Uniform pick: N names → each probability 1/N. Seepick randomly without bias.
- Multiple winners: draw without replacement (remove winners before the next pick).
- Weighted entries: only if rules allow extras — duplicate lines or explicit weights, disclosed up front.
Worked examples
- 240 unique emails, 1 prize: paste 240 lines → one pick. Re-rolling because you “wanted a different vibe” voids fairness.
- 3 prizes: pick A, remove A, pick B, remove B, pick C — or shuffle once and take the top three if the shuffle is unbiased.
- Screenshot culture: screen-record the cleaned count and the pick result if your audience expects transparency.
Biases to avoid
- Scrolling and stopping “at random.”
- Preferring followers you recognize after seeing the name.
- Quietly dropping entries after the draw starts.
