Guides/Age eligibility cutoffs

Age eligibility cutoffs explained

Leagues, classrooms, and fare rules often say “must be under 12 on September 1” or “18+ as of event day.” The cutoff is anas-of date plus a comparison on completed years — not a vibe check.

Read the rule in three parts

  1. As-of date: which calendar day is used (season start, travel day, Dec 31…).
  2. Threshold: under 13, 18 or older, 65+…
  3. Inclusive language: “through age 12” vs “under 12” can differ by one birthday.

Worked examples

  1. Born 10 Sep 2014; cutoff “under 12 on 1 Sep 2026” → age on 1 Sep 2026 is 11 → eligible.
  2. Same DOB; event on 10 Sep 2026 → turns 12 that day → may fail an “under 12 on event day” rule.
  3. Future planning:age on a future date; historical:age on a past date.

Birthday-on-cutoff edge

Policies vary on whether you “are” the new age at 00:00 on your birthday. When money or registration is involved, use the organizer’s written definition. Completed-years math:age from DOB·completed years.

Leap-day births

Feb 29 DOBs need an explicit policy in non-leap years —leap-year pitfalls.
