Leap year age calculation pitfalls
Leap years insert Feb 29 and change total days in a year span. Age in years/months/days still follows calendar birthday rules — but Feb 29 births and day-count tools need extra care.
Feb 29 birthdays
- In non-leap years, many systems treat the anniversary as Feb 28 or Mar 1 — check the form’s jurisdiction.
- “Turning N” for legal cutoffs may follow local civil rules, not a generic calculator.
- Calendar Y/M/D age borrows days from the previous month when the day-of-month does not exist.
Worked examples
- Born 2000-02-29, as of 2025-02-28: non-leap year — tools often report age just before or on the chosen anniversary convention (28 Feb vs 1 Mar).
- Born 2000-02-29, as of 2024-02-29: leap anniversary — exact whole years if the tool uses calendar birthday matching.
- Day age across a leap day: 2023-03-01 → 2024-03-01 includes Feb 29 →366 days, not 365.
- Year-only subtraction: 2024 − 2000 = 24 can be wrong before the birthday in the as-of year — same pitfall as non-leap ages. Seeage from DOB.
Common mistakes
- Assuming every year has 365 days when converting age to total days.
- Mixing “exact age” Y/M/D with days÷365.25 without saying it is approximate.
- Ignoring inclusive vs exclusive day counts around Feb 29. Related:exact age in days/weeks/months.
Calculate carefully
Use theAge Calculatorfor Y/M/D with an as-of date, and theDate Difference Calculatorwhen you need total calendar days.
