Chronological age vs completed years
Everyday speech (“I’m 28”) usually meanscompleted years since birth — the whole-year part of chronological age. Full chronological age can also include leftover months and days.
Definitions
- Completed years: how many birthdays have fully passed (integer age).
- Chronological age (Y/M/D): completed years plus remaining months and days since the last birthday.
- Day age / week age: total days or weeks lived — common for infants; seeexact age in days/weeks/months.
Worked examples
- Born 1998-05-10, as of 2026-08-25: completed years = 28; chronological detail ≈ 28 years, 3 months, 15 days.
- Born 1998-05-10, as of 2026-03-01: birthday not reached → completed years = 27(not 2026−1998=28).
- School cutoff: “must be 5 by Sept 1” uses completed years as of that date, not school-year labels.
Common mistakes
- Year subtraction alone (off by one before the birthday).
- Confusing completed years with “turning N next month.”
