Turning 40 in leap years
“Turning 40” means completed years reach 40 on the birthday anniversary in that year. Leap years change total days in a span and complicate Feb 29 births — they do not change the basic year/month/day birthday rule for most people.
Milestone rule
- Born Y-M-D → turn 40 on (Y+40)-M-D when that date exists.
- If born Feb 29, non-leap anniversary often falls on Feb 28 or Mar 1 by local convention —leap year age pitfalls.
- Party planning “in a leap year” only matters for the calendar date of the party, not a different age formula.
Worked examples
- Born 1986-06-15: turns 40 on 2026-06-15 (2026 is not a leap year — irrelevant for a June birthday).
- Born 1984-02-29: turn-40 anniversary in 2024 lands on leap day; in non-leap years follow the form’s Feb 28 / Mar 1 rule.
- As of day before: 2026-06-14 for a 1986-06-15 birth → still completed years 39.
Common mistakes
- Using year subtraction alone (off by one before the birthday).
- Assuming leap years delay or advance non-Feb-29 milestones.
- Mixing completed years with Y/M/D detail —chronological vs completed years.
