Guides/Random speaker order
How to pick a random order for speakers
Meetings and classrooms often need a speaking order that does not privilege whoever sits near the facilitator. A single fair shuffle of the roster is enough.
Simple fair process
- Freeze the name list (spelling, no silent adds).
- Shuffle once; read top to bottom as the order — equivalent to repeated drawswithout replacement.
- Publish the order before talks start so late arrivals do not renegotiate slots.
Optional transparency
- Seeded shuffle if you must reproduce the order later —seeded shuffle.
- Choose the seed before seeing who benefits.
- Casual one-off pick:without bias.
Duplicates and absences
Remove no-shows and reshuffle remaining names, or keep empty slots — say which rule you use. Deduping first:remove duplicates before a draw.

Common mistakes
- Asking for volunteers first, then “randomizing” only the reluctant remainder.
- Re-rolling until a preferred person goes first.
- Adding late names after the shuffle without a published rule.
