Tip calculator for large groups

Big parties often see auto-gratuity, shared apps, and uneven orders. Settle the tip rate first, then divide the total — or tip on the pre-tax subtotal if that is your group’s rule.

Step-by-step

  1. Read the bill for auto-gratuity / service charge — do not double-tip unless you intend to. See gratuity vs tip.
  2. Choose tip % on subtotal or on total (group agreement). Common dining rates:15% vs 18% vs 20%.
  3. Tip amount = base × (tip% ÷ 100). Grand total = base + tax (if separate) + tip (if not already included).
  4. Per person (even split) = grand total ÷ number of people. Uneven shares: split by ordered amount + shared tip pool.

Worked examples

  1. 8 people, $320 pre-tax, 18% tip, ignore tax for tip:Tip = 320 × 0.18 = $57.60. If tax is $28, total ≈ 320 + 28 + 57.60 = $405.60→ ≈ $50.70 each.
  2. 12 people, $600 check with 18% auto-gratuity already on bill:Confirm the line item covers tip; splitting $600 twelve ways = $50 each — adding another 18% would double-tip.
  3. Uneven orders: Three people owe $40 / $55 / $70 of a $165 subtotal; 20% tip = $33. Tip share proportional to order: 40/165 × 33 ≈ $8, etc., then each pays order + tip share (+ tax share).
