Guides/Split bill with tip
How to split a bill evenly with tip
The fairest simple approach for most groups: tip on the shared bill first, then divide the grand total by the number of people. That way tip is included in what everyone pays.
The equal-split formulas
- Tip = bill × (tip% ÷ 100)
- Total = bill + tip
- Per person = total ÷ number of people
Tip only on food/subtotal first if that is your group’s rule; then add tip and divide. Stay consistent.
Worked examples
- Three people, 18%: $86.40 bill → tip ≈ $15.55 → total ≈ $101.95 → ≈ $33.98 each.
- Four people, 15%: $120 → tip $18 → total $138 →$34.50 each.
- Two people, 20%: $64.50 → tip $12.90 → total $77.40 →$38.70 each.
- Six people, 20%: $210 → tip $42 → total $252 →$42.00 each.
When equal split is a bad fit
- One person ordered alcohol or a much larger entrée — tip on the whole bill, then settle food costs separately.
- Someone has a coupon or gift card covering part of the check — agree who benefits before dividing.
- Automatic gratuity already printed — do not double-tip unless you intend to.
Common mistakes
- Splitting the pre-tip bill, then forgetting tip so one card holder overpays.
- Dividing tip and food with different headcounts (someone left early).
- Rounding down every share so the tip shortfall lands on whoever pays last.
