How to split tip by meal cost share

When orders are uneven, an equal tip share feels unfair. Proportional split assigns each person the same tip rate on their food/drink share.

Steps

  1. Sum each person’s items (pre-tax is common; agree as a group).
  2. Subtotal S = sum of shares. Choose tip % (e.g. 18% or 20%).
  3. Total tip T = S × (tip% ÷ 100).
  4. Person i tip = (share_i ÷ S) × T — same as share_i × tip%.
  5. Person i pays share_i + tip_i (+ tax share if you split tax the same way).

Equal splits:split evenly with tip. Big parties:tips for large groups.

Worked examples

  1. Three shares $30 / $45 / $75, S=$150, tip 20%:T=$30. Tips: $6 / $9 / $15. Pays: $36 / $54 / $90.
  2. Shared appetizer $24: split $8 each into shares first, then apply tip % — or tip on the combined subtotal and allocate the appetizer evenly before the tip step.
  3. Auto-gratuity already on the bill: do not add a second full tip unless you intend to; still split the printed service charge by cost share if orders differed. Seegratuity vs tip.
