Guides/Passphrase vs complex password
Passphrase vs complex password
“Complex” often means mixed case, digits, and symbols in a short string. Apassphrase trades that for longer, mostly-word sequences that are easier to type and harder to brute-force when they are long and unique.
Side-by-side
- Complex short: e.g.
Tr0ub4dor&3— meets rules, still relatively short. - Passphrase: e.g. four+ unrelated words — strength scales mainly with length and unpredictability.
- Manager random: 16–20+ random characters — best for accounts you never need to memorize.
Worked examples
- Rule-compliant weak:
Summer2026!— predictable season + year. - Passphrase:
maple-orbit-linen-cactus— longer; still must be unique per site. - Site requires a symbol: append one rare character to the passphrase rather than shortening it.
Common mistakes
- Assuming any passphrase beats a long random secret from a manager.
- Using famous quotes or song lyrics as “words.”
- Reusing one strong phrase everywhere — seestrong password checklist.
