Password manager vs remembering passwords
Memorizing one strong secret is realistic. Memorizing unique strong secrets for every site is not. A password manager stores random per-site passwords; you remember (or unlock) the vault instead.
What each approach optimizes
- Remembering: works offline and for a tiny set of logins (device unlock, vault master).
- Manager: unique long random strings, autofill, breach alerts on many products.
- Hybrid: manager for almost everything; a memorable passphrase only where you must type often. See passphrase vs complex.
Worked examples
- Reuse risk: one memorized
Summer2026!on five sites fails if one leaks. - Manager: 20-character random per site — you never need to recall each string.
- Master passphrase: long unique phrase unlocks the vault; still enable 2FA on the vault account.
Common mistakes
- Using the manager but still recycling a “favorite” password for “unimportant” sites.
- Writing the master password in email or chat.
- Testing live vault passwords on remote checkers — uselocal-only checks.
