Guides/Memorable strong password
How to create a memorable strong password
Memorable and strong can coexist if you favour length and uniquenessover short strings packed with @ and 0. For most accounts, a password manager still wins — use a memorable master passphrase only where you must type by hand.
Passphrase method
- Pick four or more unrelated words (diceware-style), not a famous quote.
- Join with spaces or a rare separator; add a digit or symbol only if a site requires it.
- Make it unique to that site — never reuse the same phrase everywhere.
- Store a hint only in a password manager vault, not on a sticky note near the laptop.
Worked examples
- Weak “clever”:
P@ssw0rd2026!— short, patterned, common. - Better passphrase:
orchid-ladder-comet-velvet— long, less guessable from your bio. - Site-specific tweak: same style but a unique word set per important login — still prefer a manager for random 20-character secrets.
- Avoid: song lyrics, movie titles, or “Name + birth year.”
Common mistakes
- Trading length for one symbol (e.g. 8 characters with
!). - Reusing one “strong” phrase on email + shopping + work.
- Testing your live inbox password on a remote checker — uselocal-only checks.
