Guides/Exact age in days, weeks, months
Exact age in days, weeks, and months
Forms and milestones ask for age in different units. “Exact” can mean calendar years/months/days, or a single total (days lived, whole weeks, or approximate months).
Three common answers
- Years, months, days — calendar age (birthday arithmetic). Seeage from DOB.
- Total days — whole calendar days between birth date and as-of date.
- Weeks + leftover days — total days ÷ 7, remainder days. Related: weeks between dates.
Formulas
- Total days ≈ difference of calendar dates in whole days (exclude or include end date per the form’s rule).
- Whole weeks = floor(total days ÷ 7); leftover = total days mod 7.
- Approximate months ≈ total days ÷ 30.44 (average month) — fine for estimates, not legal age.
- Calendar months between dates follow month boundaries — seemonths between dates.
Worked examples
- Born 2024-01-01, as of 2026-01-01: calendar age2 years, 0 months, 0 days. Total days ≈ 731 (2024 leap year) → 104 weeks + 3 days.
- Born 1990-06-15, as of 2026-10-31: use year/month/day borrow for “36 years, 4 months, 16 days” style answers; separately count total days if a clinic asks for day age.
- Infant milestone: “8 weeks old” is usually total days ÷ 7 from birth, not calendar months.
Common mistakes
- Dividing days by 365 and calling it exact years.
- Mixing inclusive day counts (both ends) with exclusive (end − start).
- Using average-month division for passport or school cutoff age.
