Guides/Months between two dates
How many months between two dates
“Months between” can mean whole calendar months, an age-style years/months/days breakdown, or a rough days÷30.4 estimate. Say which rule you are using.
Three useful approaches
- Approximate: months ≈ days ÷ 30.4375 (average Gregorian month).
- Whole months: count completed month boundaries (Jan 15 → Mar 15 ≈ 2 months).
- Age-style: years + leftover months + days — same idea as an age calculator.
Worked examples
- 2026-01-01 → 2026-04-01: 90 days → ≈ 90 ÷ 30.4375 ≈ 3.0 months; also exactly 3 calendar months on the same day-of-month.
- 2026-01-15 → 2026-03-01: less than two full month anniversaries — about 1 month + 14 days in age-style counting.
- One year span: 2025-03-10 → 2026-03-10 → 12 months / 1 year on anniversary.
- Prefer days for contracts when precision matters; use months for human summaries. Related: weeks between dates, age from DOB.
Common mistakes
- Assuming every month has 30 days when billing cycles use actual calendars.
- Inclusive vs exclusive end dates shifting a “3-month” lease by a day.
- Ignoring February in leap years for day-accurate spans.
