How to tip rideshare drivers
Rideshare apps suggest tip presets after the trip. Norms vary by city; many riders use apercent of the fare or aflat minimum on short hops.
Common approaches
- Percent of fare (often mid-teens to ~20%) before taxes/fees when the app separates them.
- Flat floor on very cheap trips so a 15% tip is not tiny.
- Adjust for luggage, wait time, cleanliness, or tricky pickup spots — judgment, not a law.
Worked examples
- $18 ride × 15% ≈ $2.70 → many round to $3.
- $8 short hop × 20% = $1.60 → a $2–3 flat may feel fairer.
- $55 airport run × 18% ≈ $9.90.
