Guides/Tip for takeout
How much to tip for takeout
Takeout and counter service norms are looser than full table service. Many people tip a smaller percent, a round dollar amount, or follow the tablet prompt — this page is descriptive math, not a lecture.
Common patterns
- Pickup / bagging only: often 0–10% or a few dollars, highly variable by city and shop.
- Tablet defaults (15/20/25%) may match dine-in presets — you can choose a custom amount.
- Delivery via app: tip is often separate from restaurant tip; read the fee line.
- Table-service context:restaurant tip etiquette basics.
Worked examples
- $28 pickup, 10%: tip $2.80 (or round to $3).
- $45 order, flat $5: effective tip ≈ 11.1%.
- $60 with 15% screen preset: tip $9 — change if that feels wrong for counter-only.
