Guides/Tipping on discounted bills

Tipping on discounted bills

Discounts change the printed total. Some diners tip on thepre-discount subtotal (service on full menu value); others tip on what they actually pay. Agree as a group and check for auto-gratuity.

Two common bases

Worked examples

  1. $100 menu, 20% off → $80, tip 18% on pre-discount: tip = 100×0.18 = $18.
  2. Same bill, 18% on $80: tip = $14.40.
  3. Auto 18% already on discounted total: read the line — do not blindly stack another full tip.Gratuity vs tip.
